Fragments of aristocratic life are depicted as they are being carried out in small, simplified spaces, illuminated by an artificial light and defined by their domestic setting. In observing his scenes, the Venetian painter Pietro Longhi deploys the lucid precision, detachment, and emotional objectivity born of a scientific, Enlightenment predisposition. His expressively highly essential interpretation is nonetheless of an evocatively extraordinary efficacy.
