During the Renaissance, organ doors in chuches were often decorated. In this particular example, the Annunciation, designed by Giovanni Bellini and probably executed by his workshop, was visible when the doors were closed; when they were open they showed Saints Peter and Paul (though the latter is now lost). The walls of the Virgin Mary’s room and the niche housing Peter echo the precious fifteenth-century pavonazzo marble decoration that can still be seen today in the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli where the paintings were originally housed.
