With this painting – the last commissioned by the Scuola Grande della Carità for the hall of the new chancellor’s office – Giandomenico Tiepolo offers an extraordinary academic interpretation of his father’s style. The angel’s perfect body, inspired by Belvedere’s Apollo, and the marked design practice are sign of the new Neoclassical taste that was making its way in Veneto culture, as can be seen in the promotion of Pompeo Batoni and Raphael Mengs to members of honour at the Accademia.
