Vittore Carpaccio
Ciclo di Sant'Orsola

An angel appears to Ursula in a dream announcing her forthcoming martyrdom, symbolised by the palm leaf. The intense supernatural light surrounding the angel cleverly interplays with the natural morning light streaming in through the window and the door, revealing an array of symbolic objects: the crown at the foot of the bed, the prayer books, the hourglass, and the statues of Venus Pudica and Hercules above the two doors, clearly alluding to the royal couple’s virtues.
