Inspired by a drawing by Giambattista Piazzetta, translated into an etching for the 1745 illustrated edition of Torquato Tasso’s Jerusalem Delivered, the canvas was part of a cycle that contained another seven identified paintings. In this episode, taken from canto XIX of the poem, Erminia, accompanied by Vafrino, discovers the wounded Tancredi after his duel with Argante, whose body lies lifeless on the left. The brilliant, vibrant chromatism and the sure, swift brushstrokes create the suggestion of an animated, inimitably fresh surface.
