This work depicts a forest whose luxuriant, untamed nature absorbs the small figures of monks–hermits, witnesses to the unbridled energy of God’s creation. The monumental, frond-laden trees offer an image that completely eschews naturalism and that, what’s more, seems to foreshadow the emotional atmosphere of Romantic poetics. The canvas bears witness to the extraordinary quality attained by the fruitful collaboration between the landscapist Peruzzini and the Genoese Magnasco, a partnership that had been consolidated at the Florentine court of Ferdinando de’ Medici.
