HIERONYMUS BOSCH’S EXTRAORDINARY VISIONS

This cosy room suggests a little Cinquecento “studio” filled with the most precious works of a collection. Cardinal Domenico Grimani (1461–1523) not only owned an extraordinary collection of ancient marble sculpture but also a refined selection of paintings, mainly by Nordic painters, including Hans Memling portraits. According to Marcantonio Michiel (1521), the collection of paintings also contained works by the Flemish artist Hieronymus Bosch, which scholars have tended to interpret as the paintings currently held by the Gallerie, the only Bosches in any public Italian collection.
