Beneath the walls of Castel Sant’Angelo – which Carpaccio was familiar with through engravings – the pilgrims are received by the pope (called “Cyriacus” by the sources), who blesses Ursula and Ereo before the cardinals and bishops. The markedly perspectival vision is emphasised by the two processions converging on the centre from the background.
